About wood-look hpl panels & slats

Wood brings warmth to a facade, but real timber in South Florida means sun, salt and constant maintenance. Wood-look HPL gives a convincing grain in panels or slats that keeps its color without staining, sealing or rot.

We use it for entrances, balcony back walls, soffits and accent bands, often combined with glass and aluminum for a modern, warm facade. In cladding and facades we cover the full scope: design, fabrication, supply and installation, with installation carried out by licensed and insured partner crews.

How it is built

Anatomy of wood-look hpl panels & slats

  1. Wood-grain decorA printed and protected wood decor that keeps its color in UV and salt air, without staining or sealing.
  2. Slat profilesHPL cut into slats or battens and fixed to rails with concealed clips or screws.
  3. Soffit systemsOverhead panels or slats on suspended framing designed for wind uplift.
  4. Concealed fixingsUndercut anchors or clips for a clean face where the design calls for it.
  5. Edge finishPanel edges are sealed or left as the solid core, depending on the product and look.

Codes, testing & approvals

Performance standards

Cladding in South Florida is judged on fire safety, wind resistance and how its finish survives the sun. These are the standards behind our systems.

NFPA 285 · Fire propagation

Full-scale fire test for exterior wall assemblies that contain combustible components, typically required on buildings over 40 ft. The whole assembly is tested, not just the panel.

ASTM E84 · Surface burning

Flame spread and smoke development; exterior panels are typically specified Class A.

AAMA 2605 · Coating performance

The highest architectural coating standard (70% PVDF resin), including 10 years of South Florida exposure testing for color and gloss retention.

ASTM E330 · Wind load

Panels, fixings and sub-framing are designed and tested for the project's wind pressures, including corner zones.

Miami-Dade NOA / FL Product Approval

Approved wall-cladding systems for permitting in the HVHZ (Miami-Dade and Broward) and the rest of Florida.

AAMA 508 / 509 · Rainscreen

Test standards for pressure-equalized and drained, back-ventilated rainscreen cladding.

Code references are summarized for orientation. Final requirements are confirmed by the engineer of record and the building department for each project.

For architects & designers

Design considerations

What our engineering team reviews with the design team before the drawings are final.

  1. Coordinate grain directionGrain direction and panel layout are planned so the wood look reads naturally across the facade.
  2. Mix with metal and glassWood-look HPL pairs well with aluminum and glass; transitions are detailed as one system.
  3. Overhead safetySoffit fixings are designed with redundancy for overhead installation.
  4. Samples firstLarge samples are approved on site, since wood decors look different in strong sun.

Questions

Wood-Look HPL Panels & Slats: FAQ

Does wood-look HPL need maintenance?

Only periodic washing. It does not need sealing, staining or oiling like real wood.

Can it be used on soffits and ceilings?

Yes. Soffits are a popular use, with fixings and framing designed for overhead installation and wind uplift.

Does wood-look HPL fade?

Exterior-grade decors are designed for UV exposure and covered by the manufacturer's color warranty.

Is it more durable than real wood outdoors?

Yes. It does not rot, warp or need refinishing, which is why it is popular for South Florida soffits and entrances.
