About soffits, column covers & canopies

The surfaces people see up close are often the ones left to the end: the soffit over the entrance, the columns in the lobby, the canopy at the drop-off. We finish them in the same panel system as the facade so every visible metal surface matches.

Soffits and canopies in South Florida also have to resist wind uplift and shed water, so we engineer the framing and drainage along with the finish. In cladding and facades we cover the full scope: design, fabrication, supply and installation, with installation carried out by licensed and insured partner crews.

How it is built

Anatomy of soffits, column covers & canopies

  1. Column coversTwo- or four-piece covers in ACP or plate, with concealed joints and access for inspections.
  2. Soffit panelsOverhead panels on suspended framing, designed for wind uplift and vented where needed.
  3. Fascias and bandsHorizontal bands that cap slab edges and parapets and frame the facade.
  4. Canopy structureSteel or aluminum framing clad in panels or glass, with integrated gutters and downspouts.
  5. Access and lightingCutouts for lights, sprinklers and access panels planned in the panel layout.

Codes, testing & approvals

Performance standards

Cladding in South Florida is judged on fire safety, wind resistance and how its finish survives the sun. These are the standards behind our systems.

NFPA 285 · Fire propagation

Full-scale fire test for exterior wall assemblies that contain combustible components, typically required on buildings over 40 ft. The whole assembly is tested, not just the panel.

ASTM E84 · Surface burning

Flame spread and smoke development; exterior panels are typically specified Class A.

AAMA 2605 · Coating performance

The highest architectural coating standard (70% PVDF resin), including 10 years of South Florida exposure testing for color and gloss retention.

ASTM E330 · Wind load

Panels, fixings and sub-framing are designed and tested for the project's wind pressures, including corner zones.

Miami-Dade NOA / FL Product Approval

Approved wall-cladding systems for permitting in the HVHZ (Miami-Dade and Broward) and the rest of Florida.

AAMA 508 / 509 · Rainscreen

Test standards for pressure-equalized and drained, back-ventilated rainscreen cladding.

Code references are summarized for orientation. Final requirements are confirmed by the engineer of record and the building department for each project.

For architects & designers

Design considerations

What our engineering team reviews with the design team before the drawings are final.

  1. Uplift is the governing loadSoffits and canopies see high uplift at corners and edges. Fixings are designed for it.
  2. Coordinate the servicesLighting, sprinklers and cameras are located before panels are cut.
  3. Match the facadeUsing the same panel system and finish as the walls keeps the building consistent.
  4. Drain the canopyCanopies are detailed so water drains away from entrances and does not stain the facade.

Questions

Soffits, Column Covers & Canopies: FAQ

Can you match an existing facade color?

Yes. We match from the building, a sample or a manufacturer's color code, and submit a sample panel for approval.

Do canopies need separate engineering?

Yes. Canopies carry wind uplift and sometimes signage or lighting, so they are engineered with their connections to the structure.

Can you clad existing columns?

Yes. Column covers are made to fit existing columns, which is a fast upgrade in lobbies and arcades.

Can a canopy have glass?

Yes. Glass canopies use laminated glass on steel or stainless supports, with drainage designed in.
